Founded in 1986, the restaurant takes its name from the birthplace of its owner: the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Nestled on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea, Salonika is the second largest city in Greece. Recognized as the capital city of the region of Macedonia (Northern Greece), the city’s rich history also includes King Phillip, Alexander the Great, and architectural ruins of the Byzantine era.
The symbol of the city, the White Tower, was built by the Ottomans to protect the city from invading pirates. The Turks also used the tower as a jail until it was overtaken by the Greeks in 1912. Prior to the State of Israel, Salonika was the home to the largest Jewish Community in the World.
The restaurant has undergone many transformations since its inception. The addition of a full-service bar and a casual, cozy dining room were added over time to accommodate the growing popularity Salonika has gained over the years.
